How I Created These Vintage Christmas Botanicals
I spent a cozy autumn afternoon curating these vintage botanical illustrations, imagining how they’d look framed in a farmhouse kitchen or tucked into handmade Christmas cards. When I printed mine, I used Canson XL Mix Media cardstock on my Epson Eco-Tank —the colours came out rich and vibrant, and the paper feels substantial enough to frame or gift without worrying about it looking flimsy.
There’s something magical about holding a freshly printed botanical in your hands. It feels different from digital art—more tangible, more real. Like you’ve brought a little piece of vintage Christmas history into your home.
Whether you’re an avid junk journaler, crafter, or simply love vintage aesthetics, these botanical prints will bring a timeless look to your seasonal creations. Creative Ways To Use Your Vintage Christmas Botanical Prints
Wondering how to make the most of these vintage Christmas botanical prints? Here are some of my favourite ways to use them, along with the supplies that make each project easier:
Gift Wrapping
Print these botanicals on kraft paper or lightweight cardstock, then wrap gifts with natural twine. My go-to combo? This kraft wrapping paper roll paired with rustic jute twine. Instant vintage charm without spending a fortune on fancy wrapping paper. Bonus: your gifts will look like they came from a boutique shop.
Holiday Cards
These prints work beautifully as card fronts. I print them on heavyweight cardstock, fold them in half, and add a handwritten message inside. If you want to get fancy, a bit of gold washi tape along the edges adds the perfect festive touch.
Wall Art
Frame several botanicals together for a holiday gallery wall. I use these affordable black frames from Amazon—they make the botanicals pop against a white mat. Pro tip: Use acid-free mounting squares instead of tape so you can easily swap prints seasonally without damaging them.
Junk Journals
These are PERFECT for junk journaling. Print them, cut them out with sharp crafting scissors, and attach them using vintage washi tape or a quality glue stick. The aged look of these botanicals fits perfectly with the ephemera aesthetic. For more journaling inspiration, explore these Winter Hobbies for Women.
Gift Tags and Labels
Print these on cardstock, punch a hole with this single hole punch, and thread with red baker’s twine. Instant handmade gift tags that look like you spent hours making them (but really took 5 minutes). I make a whole batch at once and keep them in a little basket for wrapping gifts all season long.
Decorative Accents
Print and carefully cut out the botanicals to use as accents on wreaths, garlands, or place settings. A precision craft knife makes cutting intricate details so much easier. Laminate them with self-adhesive laminating sheets if you want them to last year after year.

Printing Tips for Best Results
These botanicals look stunning when printed properly. Here’s what I’ve learned after printing hundreds of vintage illustrations:
Paper matters. Print on heavier paper—at least 80lb cardstock—so your prints feel substantial and don’t curl or wrinkle. I swear by Canson XL Mix Media paper because it handles ink beautifully and has just enough texture to feel vintage. For an even more authentic aged look, try kraft cardstock or parchment paper.
Printer settings. Set your printer to “Best Quality” or “High Quality” for crisp lines and rich colours. Trust me—the difference between standard and best quality is noticeable, especially on detailed botanical illustrations like these.
Ink. If your printer uses cartridges, make sure you’ve got fresh ink. Faded botanicals lose that vintage richness. I keep backup ink for my printer on hand during the holiday season because nothing’s worse than running out mid-project.
Bonus Idea: Turn These into Watercolor Practice Sheets
Want to take these botanicals to the next level? Use them as watercolor practice templates.
Here’s what I do: Print the botanical on regular paper, then trace it onto watercolor paper using a light box or a sunny window. Then paint over the traced lines with watercolors. It’s way less intimidating than starting from a blank page, and you end up with gorgeous custom art that’s uniquely yours.
My favourite supplies for botanical watercoloring:
- Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolor set – perfect for beginners and pros alike
- Round brush set – sizes 2, 4, and 6 are ideal for botanical details
- Canson XL watercolor pad – affordable and handles multiple layers of paint
Even if you’ve never painted before, these botanical outlines give you a roadmap. Just follow the shapes and add your own color choices. You might surprise yourself with how beautiful they turn out.
