Moths and butterflies are some of the most enchanting motifs you can add to your junk journals. With their delicate wings, vintage symbolism, and timeless appeal, they bring an air of mystery and transformation to any page spread.
And as a little gift 🎁, I’m sharing 3 free sample pages from my Moth & Butterfly Junk Journal kit to inspire your own Moth Junk Journal ideas -and so you can start creating right away! (Grab them at the end of this post!)

5 Mystical Moth Junk Journal Ideas to Try…
1. Create Layered Ephemera Collages

Moths and butterflies are perfect for layering. Try printing and fussy cutting them out, then combining them with vintage tickets, lace scraps, or pressed flowers. Layer them on top of one another to create a 3D fluttering effect.
In the kit, you’ll find dedicated ephemera sheets with cut-out butterflies and moths that are ideal for this style of collage.
💡 Tip: Use strong cardstock or even junk journal covers as a sturdy base for your layers.
2. Add Fluttering Borders

Butterflies and moths look stunning when used as borders along journal pages. Print a sheet, fussy cut, and line them up along the edge of your spread. It creates a feeling of movement as if the wings are lifting right off the page.
This is also where you can use your free sample pages — cut out the moths and line them around your writing space. For more, the full kit gives you an entire collection of border-friendly images.
3. Design Hidden Tuck Spots & Envelopes
One of my favorite ways to use winged ephemera is by creating hidden tuck spots. Imagine lifting a butterfly’s wing to reveal a tiny note or a pressed flower underneath. Or, fold a butterfly image in half to create a pocket that can hold tickets, photos, or journaling cards.
If you’re already working with themed sets, the tuck spots blend beautifully with other kits like my Honey Dreams Bee Junk Journal Kit.
4. Experiment with Coloring & Inks
Butterflies and moths are the perfect canvas for experimenting with color. You can print the designs onto smooth paper and then decorate them with watercolors, gel pens, or alcohol markers.
For best results, check out my guide on paper for alcohol markers — it makes a huge difference when you want your colors to pop without bleeding.
5. Try Digital Journaling
If you enjoy working digitally, you can import the PNG files into Procreate, GoodNotes, or other digital journaling apps. This allows you to resize butterflies, recolor them, and create layered spreads without ever touching glue or scissors.
Digital journaling also means you can create layouts again and again without running out of printables — perfect if you love experimenting.
