Best Uses for Each Template Style
Quick Answer: Different sunflower template styles suit different mediums. Use delicate lineart templates for watercolor washes and slow colored-pencil work. Use folk-art stencils for high-contrast craft projects and vinyl cutting. Use mandala wreaths for mindful colouring. Use finished watercolor samples as colour-mixing guides.
For Watercolor Painting
The lineart templates with simple, open shapes (the single sunflower with bird, the bouquet pages, the bold folk-art designs) work best for watercolor — you want plenty of negative space for wet-on-wet washes, soft bleeds and pigment granulation. Transfer the outline to watercolor paper using the pencil-trace method below, then paint loosely with a round brush. I love using my Canson XL Watercolor Sketchbook for this — the paper handles water beautifully without buckling. The finished watercolor reference paintings in the pack can be used as colour guides — match your washes to the petals, centres and leaves shown.
For Coloring Pages
The detailed garden scenes (sunflowers with fences, birds and butterflies) and the mandala wreaths shine here. They have intricate compartments that reward longer colouring sessions and look gorgeous in colored pencil, gel pen or fineliner. Print on slightly heavier 120 gsm paper to handle wax and ink. The bold folk-art stencils also work — fill them in with marker for a stained-glass effect.
For Junk Journaling & Scrapbooking
The sunflower tags, bookmarks and journal card templates were made for this. Print on cream cardstock, cut them out, distress the edges with brown ink, and they’re ready to drop into vintage journal spreads, hang from binding rings, or attach to wax-sealed envelopes. The smaller wreath designs also work beautifully as decorative page corners.
For Craft Stencils & Vinyl Cutting
The bold folk-art sunflowers have high-contrast shapes that translate cleanly to stencil cutting (mylar or vinyl), fabric stamping and bold poster work. Print, cut with a craft knife, and you’ve got a reusable sunflower stencil for canvas painting, fabric, walls, mugs or wood crafts.
For Classroom & Kids’ Crafts
Print the simpler single-bloom outlines on standard paper and let kids colour them with crayons, dot markers or watercolor pencils. The folk-art stencils work great for hand-painted poster projects, and the tags can become handmade gift labels for Mother’s Day, teacher-appreciation or end-of-year gifts.

How to Use These Sunflower Templates
Quick Answer: Print the template on standard paper, then either trace the outline onto watercolor paper using a soft pencil, cut the design out for use as a stencil, or colour it in directly with pencils, markers or paint. Detailed instructions for each method below.
Method 1 — Transfer the Outline to Watercolor Paper
This is the simplest way to use a printable template for watercolor painting — no special tools needed.
- Print out your sunflower template on standard printer paper.
- Tape the printed template to a window with light behind it so you can see the outline through the paper.
- Using a soft lead pencil (2B, 4B, 6B, or 8B), firmly trace over the printed sunflower outline.
- Place the printed template with the traced pencil outline face-down on your watercolor paper.
- Using your pencil again, trace the printed outline on the back so the graphite transfers onto your watercolor paper.
- Lift the template — your sunflower outline is now on your watercolor paper.
- Start painting!
Method 2 — Use the Template as a Watercolor Stencil
If you want sharp, clean edges around your sunflower painting, the stencil method gives you crisp results.
- Print the design on mylar or transparency paper.
- Cut out the shapes using a craft knife and cutting mat.
- Position the stencil on your watercolor paper.
- Optionally apply a light wash of colour first for a layered effect.
- Spray the back of the stencil with repositionable craft adhesive.
- Press the stencil firmly onto your watercolor paper.
- Paint washes over the stencil with a light touch — don’t let pigment bleed underneath.
- Let the paint dry completely before removing the stencil.
- Wash the stencil with warm soapy water if you want to reuse it.
Method 3 — Other Creative Ways to Use These Sunflower Printables
- Print and colour them in directly with pencils, gel pens or markers.
- Print on sticker paper to make sunflower stickers for journals and laptops.
- Print on cardstock and cut out the shapes for handmade décor, gift tags and embellishments.
- Print on tracing paper, vellum or textured paper for layered art journal pages.
- Use the folk-art stencils on fabric with fabric paint or screen-printing ink.
- Frame the finished watercolor samples as instant wall art.
Easy Sunflower Canvas Painting
Quick Answer: To paint a sunflower on canvas using these templates, transfer the outline using carbon paper or the pencil-trace method, then block in colours from background to foreground — sky and stem first, leaves next, then petals in golden yellow and marigold, and finally the chestnut-brown centres. The bold folk-art designs in the pack work particularly well on canvas because their shapes are simple and high-contrast.

Printable Sunflower Leather Tooling Patterns
Quick Answer: The bold folk-art sunflower designs in the pack double as leather tooling patterns — their thick outlines and simple shapes transfer cleanly with a stylus and work well for both beginner and intermediate leather crafters. Print the design, dampen your leather, trace the outline with a stylus, then use bevelers and stamps to add depth.

Printable Sunflower Stencils
Quick Answer: The folk-art and mandala sunflower designs in the pack are best for stencilling. Print them on mylar, cut out the shapes with a craft knife, and you have a reusable sunflower stencil for canvas painting, fabric, wood, paper cards and mixed-media art journal pages.

Finished Sunflower Watercolor Reference Paintings
Quick Answer: The pack includes a handful of finished watercolor sunflower paintings you can use as colour guides for your own work, or simply print as instant wall art. They show petal shading, centre detail and leaf colour-mixing for easy reference.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sunflower Template Free Printables
Are these sunflower templates really free?
Yes — every sunflower template in the pack is 100% free for personal use. Just pop your email in the form near the top of this post and the full PDF lands in your inbox within a few minutes. No payment, no hidden costs, no account needed.
What’s inside the 35+ sunflower templates pack?
The free PDF contains over 50 pages: 22 detailed lineart sunflowers (singles, bouquets, garden scenes), bold folk-art stencils, mandala and wreath designs, sunflower tags and bookmarks, finished watercolor reference paintings, and a small set of craft idea cards. All pages are A4 portrait and print-ready.
What can I make with these printable sunflower templates?
Watercolor paintings, coloring pages, junk journal tags, scrapbook embellishments, craft stencils for canvas and fabric, gift tags, bookmarks, classroom posters, hand-painted wall art, leather tooling patterns, screen-printing designs, and decorative cut-outs for handmade cards and envelopes.
Can I use these sunflower templates for commercial projects?
These templates are free for personal use only. That includes selling individual hand-painted artworks you create from them (an original watercolor painting that uses a template as its starting point is your artwork, not mine). They cannot be resold as digital files, included in commercial template packs, or used as merch designs for mass production. For a commercial-use license, message me on Instagram.
What size paper should I print on?
All templates are designed for A4 portrait (210 × 297 mm) and also print fine on US Letter (8.5″ × 11″) with auto-fit-to-page enabled. For watercolor painting, print on standard 80–100 gsm paper first, then transfer the outline to your watercolor paper. For direct colouring, use heavier 120–160 gsm paper.
What’s the best paper for watercolor sunflower templates?
Cold-pressed watercolor paper at 300 gsm (140 lb) is the sweet spot — it handles multiple washes without buckling, has just enough texture for pigment granulation, and stays flat as it dries. Canson XL is a great beginner option; Arches and Fabriano are the next step up.
How do I transfer the sunflower outline to my watercolor paper?
Print the template on standard paper, then tape it to a sunny window with your watercolor paper behind it and trace the outline with a soft pencil (2B–6B). Alternatively, scribble graphite on the back of your printed template, place it pencil-side-down on your watercolor paper, and trace over the outline on the top side — the graphite transfers to your watercolor paper. Full step-by-step instructions are in the How to Use section above.
Can kids use these sunflower templates?
Absolutely — the simpler single-bloom outlines and folk-art designs are perfect for kids’ colouring sessions, paint-by-design crafts and classroom Mother’s Day projects. The detailed garden scenes work better for older kids and adults who enjoy a longer colouring project. Crayons, dot markers, washable markers and watercolor pencils all work well for younger children.
