How to Draw Seashells: Step-by-Step Tutorial + 35 Beautiful Seashell Drawing Ideas

Sharing is caring!

Last Updated on February 16, 2026 by Dee

There’s something deeply satisfying about drawing seashells. Those delicate spirals, the rippling ridges of a scallop, the elegant curves of a conch — they’re nature’s own art, and recreating them on paper feels like capturing a little piece of the ocean.

I spent years teaching art, and seashells were always one of my favorite subjects to share with students. They’re approachable enough for beginners (no pressure to get them “perfect” since every shell is unique), but offer enough complexity to challenge experienced artists too.

Whether you’re looking to fill your sketchbook with beach-inspired drawings, want to add ocean elements to your art journal, or just need a relaxing drawing project, this guide has you covered with step-by-step tutorials and 35 beautiful seashell drawing ideas.

What Makes Seashells Great Drawing Subjects

Seashells are ideal drawing subjects for artists at any skill level because they combine organic shapes with mathematical patterns. The spiral of a nautilus follows the golden ratio, while the ridges of a scallop create natural guidelines for shading practice.

What I love most about drawing shells is the forgiveness factor. Unlike portraits where a slightly off proportion looks immediately wrong, shells come in endless natural variations. Your “mistakes” often just look like a different shell variety.

Shells also offer fantastic texture practice. From the smooth, polished surface of a cowrie to the bumpy ridges of a murex, you’ll develop your mark-making skills while creating something beautiful.

Essential Supplies for Drawing Seashells

You don’t need fancy supplies to draw beautiful seashells. A simple pencil and paper work perfectly for beginners. That said, having the right tools can make the process more enjoyable.

For pencil drawings, I recommend a range of graphite grades. An HB for light sketching, a 2B for mid-tones, and a 4B or 6B for rich darks. This gives you the full value range you need to capture shell textures convincingly.

If you want to add color, watercolors are my go-to for shells. The transparent washes beautifully capture the luminous quality of shell surfaces. A small set with warm and cool versions of primary colors plus some earth tones is all you need.

For your sketchbook, choose paper that can handle your medium. The Canson XL Watercolor Sketchbook works beautifully for both pencil and watercolor shell studies.

How to Draw a Spiral Shell Step by Step

The spiral shell (like a nautilus or snail shell) is one of the most iconic seashell shapes. Here’s how to draw one in six simple steps.

Step 1: Start with an oval. Draw a tilted oval shape — this will be the main body of your shell. Don’t worry about making it perfect; shells aren’t perfectly symmetrical in nature either.

Step 2: Add the spiral guideline. Starting from near the center of your oval, draw a loose spiral that curves outward. This is the backbone of your shell design.

Step 3: Define the chambers. Draw curved lines from the spiral outward to the edge of the shell, creating the chamber divisions. These don’t need to be evenly spaced — variation looks more natural.

Step 4: Refine the curves. Go back and smooth out your lines. Add a slight thickness variation where the chambers meet the outer edge.

Step 5: Add texture lines. Draw fine growth lines that follow the curve of the shell. These subtle details add realism without overwhelming the drawing.

Step 6: Shade for dimension. Add shadows inside the spiral opening and along the chamber divisions. Keep the outer edge lighter to suggest the shell’s curved surface catching light.

How to Draw a Scallop Shell

Scallop shells are wonderfully symmetrical and satisfying to draw. Their fan shape and regular ridges make them perfect for beginners.

Step 1: Draw a fan shape. Start with a wide, rounded triangle or fan shape. The bottom point is where the shell would attach.

Step 2: Add the central ridge lines. Draw lines radiating from the bottom point outward to the curved top edge, like the ribs of a fan. Aim for 15-20 ridges.

Step 3: Create the scalloped edge. Make the top edge wavy, with each wave corresponding to the space between ridges.

Step 4: Add texture details. Draw faint horizontal growth lines across the ridges to show the shell’s age rings.

Step 5: Shade between ridges. The valleys between ridges are darker, while the tops of ridges catch light. This creates the dimensional, 3D look.

How to Draw a Conch Shell

Conch shells are more complex with their pointed spire and flared opening, but breaking them into simple shapes makes them manageable.

Step 1: Draw a cone shape. Start with a cone tilted at an angle — this is your shell’s basic form.

Step 2: Add the spiral whorls. Draw overlapping curved sections that spiral around the cone, getting larger toward the opening.

Step 3: Sketch the opening. The lip of a conch flares outward dramatically. Draw this as a curved, wing-like shape extending from the largest whorl.

Step 4: Add spines (optional). Many conch varieties have pointed spines along the whorls. Draw these as small triangular projections.

Step 5: Texture and shade. Add growth lines following the spiral direction, then shade the interior of the opening darker and the raised areas lighter.

Tips for Better Seashell Drawings

After years of drawing shells, here are the techniques that made the biggest difference in my work.

Draw from real shells when possible. Photos flatten the form and lose subtle details. If you don’t have shells at home, thrift stores and craft shops often sell them inexpensively. Even broken shells make great drawing subjects.

Squint to see values. When you squint at your reference, the details blur and you can see the main light and dark patterns more clearly. This helps you place shadows accurately.

Start lighter than you think. It’s easier to darken areas than to lighten them. Begin with very light pencil marks and build up gradually.

Pay attention to the opening. The interior of a shell — where the creature lived — is usually the darkest area. Getting this shadow right immediately makes your drawing look more three-dimensional.

Use a kneaded eraser for highlights. A kneaded eraser can lift graphite to create soft highlights on the shell’s surface, mimicking that natural sheen.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the easiest seashell to draw?

The scallop shell is the easiest seashell to draw for beginners. Its symmetrical fan shape and regular radiating ridges provide natural guidelines. Start with a simple fan outline, add evenly spaced lines from the base to the curved edge, and you have a recognizable shell.

How do you draw a realistic spiral shell?

To draw a realistic spiral shell, start with an oval base shape, then add a spiral guideline from center to edge. Draw curved chamber divisions along the spiral, refine the curves, add fine growth lines for texture, and shade the interior opening darkest while keeping raised areas lighter.

What pencils are best for drawing seashells?

A range of graphite pencils works best for seashell drawings: HB for initial sketching and light areas, 2B for mid-tones and general shading, and 4B or 6B for rich darks in the shell openings. A kneaded eraser helps create soft highlights on curved surfaces.

Can I draw seashells without a reference?

While you can draw shells from imagination, using a reference (real shells or photos) produces much better results. References help you capture accurate proportions, natural textures, and realistic lighting. Even experienced artists use references for detailed shell studies.

How do you shade a seashell drawing?

Shade seashells by identifying the light source first. The interior opening and undersides are darkest. Ridges and raised textures catch light on top and have shadows underneath. Use gradual tonal transitions to show the curved surfaces, and leave highlights on the shell’s outer edges.

Final Thoughts

Seashells have been inspiring artists for centuries, and it’s easy to see why. They’re endlessly varied, beautifully designed by nature, and satisfying to draw at any skill level.

Start with the simpler shapes like scallops and snail shells, then work your way up to the more complex conch and murex varieties. Use the reference pack to practice, and don’t be afraid to fill pages with imperfect studies. That’s how you improve.
