How to Use Layers in Procreate: Autumn Leaf Painting Tutorial šŸ

If you’re wondering how to use layers in Procreate, the idea of layers can feel a little mysterious… like a digital stack of tracing paper that somehow holds your art together. But once you get the hang of it, layers become your best friend — helping you paint, tweak, and experiment without ever ruining your original work.

In this tutorial, I’m sharing my process of painting an autumn leaf while showing you exactly how to use layers in Procreate step by step.

Why Layers Matter in Procreate

Think of layers as the safety net of digital painting. Instead of painting everything on one flat canvas (and panicking if you make a mistake), you can separate your work into different layers:

  • Line Art Layer ✍️ – keep your outlines crisp and safe
  • Base Color Layer 🎨 – lay down solid shapes without messing up the lines
  • Shading/Details Layer 🍂 – add depth, texture, and fun effects on top
  • Background Layer 🌿 – experiment with colour washes or textures without disturbing the main artwork

The beauty? You can toggle them on/off, reorder them, or erase from one without affecting the rest. It’s basically digital magic.

My Step-by-Step Autumn Leaf Painting in Procreate

Here’s how I approached my autumn leaf:

  1. Sketch the Outline
Start with a fresh layer for your outline. Keep it simple — just the basic shape of the leaf and its veins.
  2. Add a Base Color Layer
On a new layer under the line art, block in your leaf shape with a mid-tone autumn colour (like burnt orange, ochre, or deep red).
  3. Build Depth with Shading
Create another new layer above the base colour. Use a soft brush to add shadows where the leaf curls or overlaps.
  4. Highlights & Texture
Add yet another layer (yep, layers are stacking up now!) for highlights. Play with lighter yellows, pale oranges, or even a little green for that late-autumn feel.
  5. Background Experiments
Finally, make a background layer for washes or textures. I love using a soft wash of muted teal or warm brown to make the leaf really pop.

By separating everything, you can play with effects and adjust colours without fear. (And if you’re like me and change your mind mid-painting, layers are a total lifesaver 😂).

Tips for Using Layers Like a Pro

  • Rename your layers. “Layer 1, Layer 2, Layer 23” will make you lose your mind later.
  • Group layers. Bundle all your leaf details into one neat folder so things don’t get messy.
  • Experiment fearlessly. Try new textures or effects on separate layers — if you hate it, just delete that layer. Easy peasy.
  • Duplicate before big changes. I often duplicate a layer before trying something bold, so I can always roll back.
