What’s inside the free gift tag set

Most tags have To and From lines already on them. A few are left clear so you can write a longer message, and the whole vintage botanical sheet is blank on purpose — those ones get used the most in my house.

How to print gift tags that actually look good

Quick answer: print on card stock at 100% scale, not “fit to page”. Those two things make more difference than anything else.

1. Use card, not paper. Anything from 160gsm upwards holds its shape on a parcel. A vintage-style cardstock pack in cream or kraft gives you that warm, slightly old-fashioned look without doing anything clever.
2. Print at actual size. In your print dialogue choose 100% or “actual size”. If you leave it on “fit to page” everything shrinks by a few percent and the tags come out slightly undersized.
3. Do a single test sheet first. One page on plain paper tells you whether your colours and margins are right before you commit good card to it.
4. Let the ink dry properly. Card holds more ink than paper. Give it a couple of minutes before you stack the sheets or you’ll get transfer marks.

I print mine on an Epson EcoTank, which is the one thing I’d recommend to anyone printing a lot of freebies — the cost per page is low enough that you stop rationing yourself, which is rather the point of having a folder full of printables.

Cutting, punching and making them last

Quick answer: cut along the outer edge of each tag including the angled top corners, then punch the hole on the small marked circle. A 6mm punch lines up exactly.

The angled corners are part of the design rather than a decoration — following them is what gives you the classic tag silhouette. If you’re cutting a lot of them, a Firbon titanium paper trimmer will get you straight edges far faster than scissors and stops that slightly wonky look you get when you’re rushing.

A few things I’ve learned doing these in batches:

• Cut all the long edges first, then the corners — it’s quicker and more accurate than finishing one tag at a time.
• If the hole tears easily on thinner card, an eyelet setter kit reinforces it and makes a tag survive being re-used year after year.
• A pair of decorative edge scissors along the bottom edge gives a scalloped or pinked finish that looks far more considered than the effort it takes.
• Punch the hole before you write on the tag. Punching afterwards has a way of cracking straight through a name you’ve just carefully written.

Pretty ways to tie them on

Quick answer: natural jute twine suits kraft paper and botanical designs, narrow satin or lace ribbon suits the florals, and a scrap of torn fabric works beautifully on anything.

Twine is the easy default and it goes with everything, but if you want a parcel to look a bit special, a lace ribbon assortment threaded through the hole and tied in a loose double knot does most of the work. Don’t tie it too tight — a tag that swings a little looks more relaxed than one pulled flat against the paper.

For the vintage botanical tags I like torn strips of old cotton, about a centimetre wide. And if you’re going all in, a blob of sealing wax from a wax seal kit over the knot is ridiculous and completely worth it.

Using the blank tags in a junk journal

Quick answer: the blank botanical tags work as journalling tags, pocket inserts and bookmarks — print them on thinner card so they sit flat in a journal.

This is where the blank sheet earns its place. Tags are one of the most useful things you can have loose in a junk journal: tucked into a pocket, glued along one edge as a flap, layered under a photo, or used as a little hidden note. Write the date along the bottom and they become a record rather than just a decoration.

Christmas is the obvious one, but the set gets used all year here. A few ways they’ve come in handy:
