There’s something about a paper angel at the top of the tree. It doesn’t matter how wonky the cutting is; it’s always the bit of Christmas people remember.

So I’ve put together 12 free angel templates in one printable PDF: a tree topper angel, a praying angel, a cherub, an angel with a trumpet, a kneeling angel and more, plus three pages of angel wings. Trace them, color them, paint them or cut them out.

Quick answer: this is a free set of 12 printable angel templates (clean black outlines, one angel or pair of wings per page) as an A4 PDF that also prints on US Letter, plus the 12 pages as separate PNG files. Nine are angels and three are angel wings. They’re free for personal, classroom and church use, not for resale. Pop your email in the box at the top of this post and they’ll land in your inbox in a minute.

Print at 100% on A4 (or “fit to page” on Letter), then scroll down to see every template with an idea for using it.

All 12 Angel Templates at a Glance

Here’s the whole set on one page so you can see what you’re getting. Every template is a full page with a big, clear outline and plenty of white space, so it’s easy to cut out and easy to color.

How to Use These Angel Templates

Quick answer: print at 100% on A4 or “fit to page” on Letter, use printer paper for coloring and 160–200 gsm card for toppers and ornaments, and trace with a window or light pad.

Each template fills an A4 page. On US Letter, tick “fit to page” and you lose almost nothing. For ornaments and gift tags, set the scale to 50% and you’ll get a little angel about half the height. For a big wall angel or a pair of photo-backdrop wings, print the PNG at A3 or tile it across two sheets.

Which paper to use

Plain printer paper is fine for coloring and tracing. For anything that needs to stand up or hang (tree toppers, ornaments, garlands) use thin card, around 160–200 gsm. If you want to paint, print onto mixed-media paper or a sheet from a watercolor pad like the Canson XL watercolor pad; most home printers will take it if you feed it one sheet at a time.

Trace, transfer or cut

The simplest way to trace is to tape the template to a bright window and lay your paper on top. An LED light pad does the same job at the kitchen table. To transfer onto thicker paper, scribble soft pencil over the back of the template, flip it, and go over the lines. For cutting, cut a few millimeters outside the line first, then trim, and use small, sharp scissors for the feathers.

Coloring and painting angels

Angels look best with a light touch. Keep the wings mostly white and add just a whisper of pale blue, lilac or blush in the shadows between the feathers. Soft creams and golds work beautifully on the robe, and a gold or metallic pen on the halo makes it glow. Watercolor pencils are lovely for this because you can color lightly and then soften it with a damp brush.

1. Tree Topper Angel Template

A standing angel in a long bell-shaped gown with a sash, wavy hair, a ring halo and big feathered wings, hands folded in front of her. The wide skirt is made for the top of the tree, and she works just as well as a card front or a quiet colouring page for a December evening.

To make a tree topper, print on card, cut around the outside of the wings, cut a slit up the middle of the skirt and curl it into a cone so it sits over the top branch.

2. Folded-Paper Angel Template

A friendly angel drawn in a folded-paper style: angular wings, a pleated skirt with straight fold lines and a ring halo, hands together in front. The bold geometric shapes are easy to trace, easy to color panel by panel and easy to cut out.

Color each fold of the skirt a slightly different shade and it looks like real folded paper. It’s a drawing and tracing template, not a fold-it-yourself pattern.

3. Praying Angel Template

A tall, gentle angel with her head bowed, hands together in prayer, long wavy hair and a slim halo, long folds falling down her robe and feathered wings behind. A lovely one for Sunday school, a nativity display or a Christmas Eve service sheet.

Soft pencil shading in the folds of the robe is all she needs; keep it light and leave lots of white.

4. Cherub Template

A chubby little cherub in flight with curly hair, tiny feathered wings, a soft drape of cloth and one arm raised. Cherubs are the sweetest thing on gift tags and Christmas cards, and they’re brilliant in a junk journal too.

Shrink it to 50% and you’ve got a gift-tag-sized cherub; punch a hole at the top and thread some ribbon through.

5. Angel with a Trumpet Template

A herald angel with a halo and long flowing hair, blowing a long trumpet, with big feathered wings and a gown that sweeps out behind her. It has lots of movement, so it suits a card that says “Joy to the World” or a banner across a classroom wall.

Try it in gold and cream with a white gel pen for the highlights on the trumpet.

6. Angel Holding a Star Template

A sweet little angel with a short bob, a halo and feathered wings, holding a big five-pointed star in both hands. The star is the fun bit to color: yellow, gold, glitter glue, the lot.

It’s a good one for a window: color it, then rub a little cooking oil on the back of plain paper and it glows when the light shines through.

7. Simple Angel Outline Template

The easiest template in the set: a plain angel silhouette with a round head, two rounded wings and a gently flared robe, and no features at all. It’s the one for preschool cutting practice, for stencils and for designing your own angel from scratch.

Draw around it on felt, foam or old Christmas cards for a quick angel ornament.

8. Angel Ornament Template

A little cartoon-style angel with a halo, wavy hair, praying hands, small wings and a scalloped hem, with a loop at the top ready for hanging. Print it small and it’s an ornament; print it big and it’s a cheerful colouring page.

Print it at 50% on card, cut it out and thread twine through the loop. Six or seven on a string makes a mantel garland.

9. Kneeling Angel Template

A kneeling angel in profile with her head bowed and hands clasped, a halo, long hair and big feathered wings sweeping up behind. She’s the kind of angel that sits beside the manger in a nativity scene, so pair her with a simple stable and star and you’ve got a whole scene.

Print two and color one a little differently, and you’ve got a matching pair to kneel on either side of the manger.

10. Feathered Wings Pair Template

A pair of spread angel wings on their own, with layers of feathers outlined. This is the template people are often looking for when they search for angel wings: for cards, wall art, photo backdrops or a costume pattern.

Enlarge it and trace it onto big card for a photo-booth wall, or color the feathers in an ombre from white to soft gold.

11. Simple Wings Pair Template

Simpler, rounder angel wings with just a few rows of big scalloped feathers. Much quicker to cut out, so this is the one to reach for with kids or when you need lots of them.

Glue a pair onto the back of a clothespin, paper cup or toilet roll and you’ve made an angel in seconds.

12. Heart-Shaped Wings Template

Two feathered wings that come together in the shape of a heart. They’re lovely for Valentine’s and memorial cards as well as Christmas, and for art journal pages and card fronts where a pair of wings says it all.

Watercolor pencils are lovely here: color lightly along each feather, then soften with a damp brush.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I get a free printable angel template?

Right here. Pop your email into the box at the top of this post and the PDF of all 12 angel templates comes straight to your inbox, along with a link to the 12 PNG files. You can also download it straight from the thank-you message.

Is there an angel wings template in this set?

Yes, three of them: a pair of feathered angel wings (template 10), a pair of simple rounded wings (template 11) and a pair of heart-shaped wings (template 12).

How do I make an angel tree topper from a template?

Print the tree topper angel (template 1) on thin card, color it and cut it out. Cut a slit from the bottom of the skirt to about halfway up, curl the skirt round into a cone and tape or glue the overlap. The cone sits over the top branch of the tree.

What size are the angel templates?

Each template is a full A4 portrait page (2480 × 3508 pixels, 300 dpi). They print on US Letter too: just choose “fit to page” and the angel shrinks very slightly to fit. Use your printer’s scale setting for smaller ornaments or bigger wall angels.

Can I use these angel templates in church or in my classroom?

Yes. Personal, classroom and church or Sunday school use are all fine, so print as many as you need. Please don’t sell the files or share them online as your own.
