There’s something about a row of stockings that makes a room feel like Christmas straight away. Even before anything goes in them.
So I’ve put together 12 free Christmas stocking templates, as a printable PDF. There’s a plain classic stocking, a cuffed one, stripes, cable-knit, patchwork, a name tag stocking, a page of minis, a matching pair and a few extra-special ones with holly, a candy cane and toy, lace and jingle bells. Print them, color them, paint them, sew them or cut them from felt.

Quick answer: this is a free printable pack of 12 Christmas stocking templates (black outlines on white) in one A4 PDF (it prints fine on US Letter with “fit to page”), plus the same 12 pages as 300 dpi PNG files. Use them for paper crafts, coloring, painting, felt stockings, gift tags and classroom displays. They’re free for personal and classroom use, not for resale. Pop your email in the form at the top of this post and the PDF comes straight to your inbox.

What’s in the Free Christmas Stocking Templates
The PDF has 15 pages: a cover, the 12 stocking templates (one per page), a page of printing and making tips, and a page about my Patreon. The title’s “12” counts the templates only.
Each template is a clean black outline on a white page, with thick lines that are easy to see, trace and cut along. There’s no shading or grey, so they print crisp on any home printer and don’t eat your ink. You also get a zip with the 12 template pages as separate PNG files, in case you’d rather print one at a time or use them in a cutting machine or design app.
All 12 Stocking Templates at a Glance
Here they all are, numbered the same way as the PDF, so you can pick your favorites before you print.

How to Use These Christmas Stocking Templates
Quick answer: print at 100% on A4 (or “fit to page” on US Letter), choose your paper for the job, then trace, cut, color or paint.
Printing and scaling
Print at 100% (actual size) on A4. On US Letter, choose “fit to page” and the stocking shrinks a touch to fit. Want a bigger stocking? Print at 141% on A3, or use your printer’s poster or tiling setting to spread one page across two sheets. For gift tags, print at 50% and you’ll get little stockings about half the size.
Choosing your paper
Ordinary printer paper is perfect for coloring pages and tracing. Thin card (160 to 200 gsm) is better for cut-outs, garlands, tags and stencils you want to keep. If you want to paint, print onto watercolor or mixed-media paper so it doesn’t buckle.
Tracing and transferring
Tape the template to a window or a light pad, lay your paper on top and trace. A light pad for tracing makes this so much easier, especially onto thicker card. No light pad? Scribble soft pencil all over the back of the template, flip it over and go over the lines, and the outline transfers onto whatever is underneath.
Coloring and painting
Pencils, crayons, markers and watercolor all work. Alcohol markers like these Ohuhu markers give lovely flat, bright color on the stripes and patches. Classic red and white always looks right, but forest green, mustard and cream look really special too.

1. Plain Classic Stocking Template
The one to start with: a plain stocking outline with nothing on it, so you decide on the cuff, the loop and every pattern. It’s the easiest shape to cut from felt or to trace round as a stencil, and it’s big enough to fill the whole page with your own design.
2. Broad Cuffed Stocking Template
A chunky, short stocking with a big rounded cuff and a hanging loop, toe pointing right. The wide leg gives you lots of room to color, and the cuff is just asking for cotton wool or a strip of white faux fur.
3. Slender Striped Stocking Template
A tall, slender stocking with diagonal candy stripes, a little cuff and loop, and a curled elf toe. Red and white is classic candy cane, but green and gold looks lovely too, and it’s a great one for practicing neat coloring between the lines.
4. Cable-Knit Stocking Template
A knitted-look stocking with a ribbed cuff and a twisted cable running down the leg, plus heel and toe patches. Color it in cream and grey for a properly cozy jumper feel, or go bold with red and green.
5. Patchwork Stocking Template
A stocking made of quilt-style patches with stitch lines, a heart in the top patch and a row of three little buttons. Fill each patch with a different color or a scrap of patterned paper, and it looks properly homemade.
6. Stocking with a Name Tag Template
A scalloped cuff with a blank tag tied on with string, ready for a name. It’s the one I’d use for a classroom display or family stockings: everyone colors their own and writes their name on the tag.

7. Three Mini Stockings Template
Three little stockings on one page, each with its own cuff and loop: a tall one and a short one with heel and toe patches, and a striped one with a curled elf toe. They’re just the right size for gift tags, garlands, card toppers and tiny place cards for the Christmas table.
8. Pair of Stockings Template
Two stockings side by side, one with a plain cuff and one with a scalloped cuff, toes pointing opposite ways. Make a matching pair for the mantelpiece, one for you and one for a little one, or two for the pets.
9. Stocking with Holly Template
A stocking with a sprig of holly and berries tucked into a bow at the cuff. Paint the berries bright red and the leaves in two greens, then cut it out for a traditional little decoration or a Christmas card front.
10. Stocking with Candy Cane and Toy Template
A cuffed stocking with a candy cane and a hobby horse toy peeking out of the top. It’s the most “Christmas morning” page in the set: color the toy, the stripes and the stitching, and you’ve got a lovely little scene.
11. Lace-Cuff Vintage Stocking Template
A classic vintage-style stocking with a wide foot, a lace-edged cuff and a ribbon bow, toe pointing left. It’s a bit different from the rest: lovely for a dreamy, old-fashioned card or a vintage Christmas journal page.
12. Victorian Stocking with Bells Template
A Victorian-style stocking with a scalloped cuff trimmed with three little bows and three jingle bells, and a curled toe. It’s the most decorative page here, so take your time and color the bells gold.
How to Make a Felt Stocking from a Template
Quick answer: cut two pieces of felt from the template with a seam allowance, stitch or glue them together round the sides and bottom, add a cuff and a loop, and leave the top open.
- Cut out the paper template on the line. The Plain Classic (1), Broad Cuffed (2) and Cable-Knit (4) templates are the easiest shapes for felt.
- Pin it to two layers of felt and cut about 1 cm (3/8 in) outside the line. That extra edge is your seam allowance, so the finished stocking stays the same size as the template.
- Join the edges. Blanket stitch round the sides and bottom in a contrasting thread, or use fabric glue if you’re making them with children. Leave the top open.
- Add the cuff. Cut the cuff shape from white felt and stitch or glue it over the top edge.
- Add a hanging loop from a short piece of ribbon folded in half and stitched inside the back corner.
- Personalize it. Write a name on the cuff with fabric pen, or cut letters from felt scraps and glue them on.
For paper stockings, it’s even simpler: cut, color and glue. A tidy tape runner like the Tombow Mono permanent adhesive is great for sticking paper patches onto the Patchwork stocking without any wrinkles.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I get a free Christmas stocking template?
Right here. Pop your email in the box at the top of this post and I’ll send you a printable PDF with 12 Christmas stocking templates, plus a zip of the 12 pages as PNG files. There’s also a download link on the thank-you message, so you can print straight away.
What size is the stocking template when I print it?
Printed at 100% on A4, the single stockings are roughly 20 to 26 cm (8 to 10 in) tall. That’s a nice size for paper crafts, coloring and small felt stockings. For a full-size hanging stocking, print at 141% on A3, or tile the page across two sheets in your printer settings and tape them together.
Can I use these templates to sew a felt Christmas stocking?
Yes. Pin the paper template to two layers of felt, cut about 1 cm (3/8 in) outside the line for a seam allowance, and stitch or glue round the edge, leaving the top open. The Plain Classic, Broad Cuffed and Cable-Knit templates are the easiest shapes for sewing.
Can I use the stocking templates in my classroom?
Of course. Print as many copies as you need for your own class or home group. Please share the link to this post rather than the PDF itself, and don’t sell the templates or the printed copies.
What paper is best for printing stocking templates?
Plain printer paper is fine for coloring and tracing. Use 160 to 200 gsm card for cut-outs, garlands and reusable stencils, and watercolor or mixed-media paper if you want to paint.
Final Thoughts
A stocking is one of the simplest Christmas shapes there is, which is exactly why it works for everything from a toddler’s first coloring page to a proper felt stocking that comes out every December. Print a few, put the kettle on, and see which one you like best.
If you haven’t grabbed them yet, pop your email in at the top and the 12 templates will be in your inbox in a minute or two.
