I have a real soft spot for old Halloween ephemera. Not the scary stuff, the charming stuff: faded pumpkin orange, little bats with friendly faces, shop signs that look like they’ve hung outside a village shop since 1920. So I painted a set of signs in that spirit, and these three are yours to keep.

What’s in the free pack

You get a 5-page A4 PDF:

  • A cover page
  • Witch Parking Only (“All Others Will Be Toad”) and Beware of Bats (“Low Flying Zone”) as outlines to paint
  • The same two signs ready-painted in soft vintage watercolour
  • Pumpkin Patch (“Est. 1888”) as an outline and ready-painted
  • A how-to page with printing tips

How to paint your signs

These are meant to be painted loosely, in about fifteen minutes each. Nobody is going to inspect your pumpkin with a magnifying glass.

  1. Start with the background. A pale wash of yellow ochre or a watered-down pumpkin orange gives that old, sun-faded board look. Let it bleed a little past the lines. That’s part of the charm.
  2. Paint the picture next. Keep the bat soft: a blue-grey or charcoal wash with white paper left for highlights, rather than flat black. For the pumpkins, drop a little more orange into the wet paint on one side so they look round.
  3. Leave the letters till last. Once everything is dry, fill the hollow letters with a deep plum or a warm charcoal. A smaller brush helps here.
  4. Let it dry flat under a heavy book if the card has curled.

If you’d like more ideas for the season, my Halloween watercolor ideas are a lovely next step, and the bat templates make a good companion to the Beware of Bats sign.

Ways to use your Halloween signs

  • On the mantel: prop them against the wall with a few small pumpkins and a candle.
  • On the front door: Witch Parking Only is made for the front door or the porch. Tape it inside a window if it might rain.
  • On the party table: stand Pumpkin Patch next to the snacks, or fold a strip of card behind it as a stand.
  • In a junk journal: the painted versions make a nice focal piece on a Halloween spread. My vintage Halloween ephemera printables go well alongside.
  • With the grandkids or a class: print the outlines and paint them together. They’re simple shapes, so they suit beginners.

Printing tips

  • Print at 100% / actual size, not “fit to page”, so the cut lines stay where they should.
  • To paint, use watercolour or mixed-media card that your printer can take (around 200–300gsm). Plain printer paper buckles when it gets wet.
  • For the ready-painted versions, a matte photo paper or a bright white card gives the richest colour.
  • The PDF is A4. It prints on US Letter too; you’ll just have slightly smaller margins.
  • Cut on the dashed lines with scissors or a craft knife.

Questions

Are the signs really free?
Yes. Pop your email into the form near the top of this post and the PDF comes straight to your inbox. Have a peek in your spam folder if it doesn’t turn up within a few minutes.

Are they scary?
Not at all. They’re cosy, old-fashioned Halloween: friendly bats, pumpkins and a witch’s hat. Nothing gory.

Can I use them in a classroom?
Yes, for your own class or home use. Please don’t resell or share the file itself; send people to this page instead.

What paint should I use?
Any watercolour set works, even a children’s one. A size 8 round brush for the washes and a size 2 for the letters is plenty.
